Board Members
Board Appointments
Board members are appointed to a 5-year term. They are volunteers who serve without pay. Trussville’s City Council appoints board members when a position is vacant. Interviews are coordinated through City Hall. Board members serve staggered terms, so there are always experienced members on the board.
Dr. Steve Ward was appointed to the Trussville City Board of Education for a term of 2017-2022 and a second term of 2022 - 2027. Dr. Ward is a retired educator. He has served as a classroom teacher, school counselor, Assistant Principal, Principal and College Professor in Georgia. Dr. Ward holds a BS in Education from Auburn University, a M.S. in History from University of Southern Mississippi, an Ed.S. and Ph.D. in Administration from Georgia State University.
Dr. Ward is married to Marcia and they have a son Marc (Callie) who also live in Trussville and two grandchildren who attended Trussville City Schools.
Mrs. Sherrye Tolbert was appointed to the Trussville City Board of Education in March of 2021 and is serving a 5-year term ending 2026. Mrs. Tolbert worked in the banking industry prior to her current career, Multifamily Housing. She has been serving the Multifamily Housing industry for more than two decades.
Mrs. Tolbert is a native of West Point, MS, though she has been in the Birmingham area since 1996. She and her husband, Bernardo, have two children. The family has been involved in Trussville City Schools and the general Trussville community over the years in many capacities.
Mr. Jason Daniel was appointed to the Trussville City Board of Education May 2023 and will serve a 5-year term ending May 2028.
Jason currently serves as the Vice President for Physician Practice Administration for the UAB Health System. He has been with UAB for almost 25 years and has served in many capacities during his career. He holds both a Bachelors degree in Finance from Jacksonville State University and a Masters degree in Business Administration from UAB. He is currently serving as a board member and Treasurer for Leadership Trussville.
Jason is married to Michelle Daniel and they have lived in Trussville since 2005. They have 2 children in Trussville City Schools, a son and a daughter. They are active members of First Baptist Trussville.
Mrs. Kim DeShazo was appointed to the Trussville City Board of Education in May 2019 and is serving a 5-year term ending 2029. Mrs. DeShazo and her husband, John, have lived in Trussville since 2007. They have three children: Sally, Jed and Ben (all attending TCS schools).
Mrs. DeShazo graduated from Birmingham-Southern College with a B.S. in International Business, and followed that up with a law degree from the University of Alabama School of Law. Mrs. DeShazo and her husband are both practicing attorneys with the firm Webster, Henry, Bradwell, Cohan, Speagle & DeShazo.
She previously served on the Trussville City Schools Foundation Board from 2017-2019, until she was appointed to the TCS board. Mrs. DeShazo is also a board member of Pathways Professional Counseling and is an active member of First Baptist Church of Trussville, where she and her husband teach a young married couples' Sunday school class. The DeShazos are also active in the foster community, having served as foster parents through Jefferson County DHR.
Mrs. Kathy Brown was appointed to the Trussville City Board of Education in December of 2014 and is serving a 5-year term ending 2030. She has been a Trussville resident since 1988. She is married to Keith Brown and they have five children (all HTHS graduates) Jake (Lindsay), Haley, Sam (Jessica), Joe David and Tucker and grandchildren Ann Margaret and Ford.
Kathy earned her B.S. degree from the UAB School of Nursing and works part time at Brookwood Advanced Wound Care Center. Brown has served on Trussville City Schools Foundation while also serving in several roles for the Hewitt-Trussville Athletic Foundation since 2002.
She is an active member of Wilson Chapel United Methodist Church in Roebuck Springs and currently serves as Children/Youth Coordinator and Mission Team.
